Oxygen cylinder blast on naval ship injures 3 sailors

A sailor lost his leg and two others were injured in an oxygen cylinder blast on board naval ship INS Nireekshak on April 16.An inquiry has been ordered.

A senior Navy official said that the explosion took place while a diving bailout bottle -- a small 12 inch bottle which is carried by Divers in their diving helmet -- was being charged.

“The explosion happened while the crew was working on the deck of the ship,” he said and added that this is the first time such an incident has happened in the Navy.

One sailor sustained serious injuries and his right leg had to be amputated above the knee and two other sailors sustained splinter injuries in the stomach and on the leg.

The injured were initially admitted in the Military Hospital in Thiruvanthapuram as the ship was on its way to Mumbai from Visakhapatnam. Their condition has since stabilised and they have now been shifted to Mumbai.
